By the end of 2014, in al-Watiya AB, Libyan Air Force (i.e. General Haftar's Air Force) started to work to make operational former Su-22s. Ten to twelve of these Su-22Ms were stored in shelters before the uprising and escaped the destruction by NATO because they were decommissioned (see Oryxblog (1)(2) ). In March,on the same air base, photos appeared of a Libyan Air Force Mirage F1AD started to be repaired by cannibalizing other aircrafts (see Oryxblog (3) ). Since December 1st, Libyan Air Force added two new aircrafts in its fleet, a Mirage F1AD (serial 402) and a Su-22(UM-3K) at al-Watiya.

During the Libyan uprising in 2011, most of the Libyan Air Force aircrafts were destroyed by NATO airstrikes. After the first civil war, the Free Libyan Air Force was reduced to a few former G-2 Galebs, J-21 Jastrebs, L-39s, Mig-21bis, Mig-21UMs, Mig-23MLs and 23UBs, with the adding of the two Mirage F1EDs that defected to Malta and some transport aircrafts like An-32 and C-130H in poor flying conditions.  On April 12th, 2012, Mirage F1ED serial 502 crashed near Kasr El Hamrouniya Ben Gashir killing the pilot.

Two months ago, first official flight of an Iraqi CH-4B Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was performed during the visit of Defence Minister, Mr. Khaled al-Obeidi at al-Kut Air Base. On December 6th, a CH-4B from 84th Squadron was engaged for the first time in an airstrike in Ramadi destroying an artillery piece hidden in a factory. This gun was targeting Iraqi forces stationed at Palestine Bridge north of the city. On 25 November, with the support of the bombing of the international coalition led by the US, Iraqi security forces (ISF) and anti-terrorism forces regained Palestine Bridge, which crosses the Euphrates. The video below show the FLIR of one of these drones targeting a gathering of ISIS fighters, western of the city of Ramadi, destroying one vehicle with an HG-10 ATGM (Anti-Tank Guided Missile). Iraq ordered CH-4B to China, probably after the visit of Chinese foreign minister in February 2014. First batch was received on January 23rd, 2015.

On August 22nd, 2015, Mi-35M serial “YI-161” has made an emergency landing in a safe area west of Samarra after hit a power line. The crew was wounded and the helicopter suffered damages after starting to burn. A technical specialized team examined the damages before transferring it to its own base to eventually be repaired and returned to service. The video and photos below show this Hind being transported on a truck. But seeing the footage, the helicopter was structure damaged, especially on the tail which part is missing. The 35th Attack Squadron of Iraqi Army Aviation lost two others Mi-35M before, one crashed at Al-Saqlawiyah near Fallujah on June 16th, 2014 and another was shot down on October 3rd, 2014 by a FN-6 MANPADS between Baiji and al-Senniyah. On November 4th, a pilot managed to make an emergency landing after been wounded by ground fire west of Ramadi. The helicopter and its crew were safe.

Airstrikes against ISIS in Sirte and Bin Jawad were carried out by Libyan aircrafts, not French

On Sunday, January 10th 2016, unidentified aircrafts carried out airstrikes against Islamique State position in Sirte and Bin Jawad. The Libyan National Army (LNA) claimed that these fighter jets flew from France, but French Ministry of Defense denied this information. In fact, these bombings were provided by airplanes that took off from Misrata Air Force Academy. This airbase is in the hands of Libya Dawn (or Fajr Libya) Air Force. Aircrafts involved were the two Mig-23MLDs in service in Tripoli government side. Beginning December 2014, a group of Ukrainian technicians from Odessa ARZ restored these two Floggers. Libya Dawn also managed to get a few R-24s (AA-7 "Apex") and R-60s (AA-8 "Aphid") missiles back to operational condition for their Mig-23MLDs. The "Libya Dawn Air Force" has two Mirage F1EDs, five G-2 Galebs, one J-21 Jastreb, two Mig-23MLDs, six SF-260 and one Mi-35 operational.

The photos below taken on Sunday, show one of the two Mig-23MLDs carrying a R-24T and a R-60 air-to-air missiles and one OFAB-250 unguided bomb with these words written on it : "Operation on behalf of martyrdom al Zliten".

In January 2011, Iraq signed an initial contract for 3 USD billion for the acquisition of 18 F-16C/D Block 52s (12 F-16Cs and 6 F-16Ds) for a initial delivery between 2014 and 2015. In October 2012, 18 more F-16C/Ds (still 12 F-16Cs and 6 F-16Ds) were ordered for a delivery between 2017 and 2018. On May 2nd, 2014, the first Iraqi F-16IQ (F-16D serial 1601) made its first flight in the sky of Forth Worth. Initially, they had to arrive in their Iraqi base in September 2014, but the progression of the Islamic state militants on all the country stopped this transfer together with the fact that Balad AB was not ready and enough secure. On July 13th, 2015, two F-16IQs (serial 1607 and 1610), and two F-16D (serial 1601 and 1604) landed at Balad AB and joined the new 9th Fighter Squadron. The two photos below show the two new vipers in Balad AB.

On Sunday morning February 7th, 2016, unidentified aircrafts striked the city of Derna. Bab Tobruk District and an area controlled by Shura Council were targeted killing four civilian and two fighters. According to some sources, the airstrikes have hit ammunition and weapons stored in residential area by DMSC (Derna Mujahedeen Shura Council) resulting in huge explosions. Colonel Muftah Hamza from LNA (Libya National Army) denied all the rumors that say that the Libyan Air Force was behind these attacks. Egypt or Emirates Air Force were suspected for the bombings. Today, MiG-23ML serial "6132" from Tobruk carrying out strikes on Derna was hit by DMSC and the pilot, colonel Younes Al-Dinali ejected safety. Later, this pilot claimed that its aircrafts suffered technical malfunction led to a fire in the engine. This events confirmed that the unknown jets were finally aircrafts from Libyan Air Force contrary to what was told by LNA. On January 4th, another MiG-23ML (serial "6472") crashed due to technical problemes and the pilot was safe.

On January 10th, others unidentified aircrafts carried out airstrikes in Sirte and Bin Jawad. First, the Libyan National Army (LNA) claimed that these fighter jets flew from France, but these bombings were provided by MiG-23MLD from Libya Dawn Air Force (See : Airstrikes against ISIS in Sirte and Bin Jawad were carried out by Libyan aircrafts, not French)

At eight o'clock in the morning on February 20th, 2016, LNA (Libyan National Army) Air Force launched an operation dubbed "blood of the martyr". MiG-21s fighter jets carrying S-24 rockets (diameter 24 cm or 9.4 inches) and Mi-35s carried out successive air strikes in support of the LNA forces against Ansar al-Sharia group in Benghazi (allied with IS) destroying eight targets in Abu A'atni, Sidi Faraj and al-Hawari district. Intense fighting were also reported on Garyunes, al-Laithi & al-Sabri fronts. Since the losses of its three MiG-23s in the last two months over Abu Hadi, Derna and Garyunes, LNA AF can now rely on seventeen "Fishbed" and the only Su-22 in service, together with cinq Mi-35 gunship and fifteen Mi-8T helicopters.

New Libyan National Army Air Force MiG-23ML soon operational

During the Libyan uprising in 2011, most of the Libyan Air Force aircrafts were destroyed by NATO airstrikes. After the first civil war, the Free Libyan Air Force was reduced to a few former G-2 Galebs, J-21 Jastrebs, L-39s, Mig-21bis, Mig-21UMs, Mig-23MLs and 23UBs, with the adding of the two Mirage F1EDs that defected to Malta and some transport aircrafts like An-32 and C-130H in poor flying conditions. The Libyan Army Aviation consisted in Mi-8, Mi-17 and Mi-35 helicopters.

On May 16th 2014, General Haftar forces launched “Operation Dignity” against Benghazi Islamist militia groups’ bases using helicopters, fighter jets and ground forces in the assault. On July 13th, “Operation Libya Dawn” was launched by Misrata militias and Islamists on Tripoli International Airport. On October 15th, airstrikes were performed against “Ansar al-Sharia” and “February 17 Martyrs Brigade”. Haftar’s forces claimed these attacks, but conflicting reports might involve Egyptian in this operation. However, in October, Libyan Air Force received three Mig-21MFs and three Mi-8s that can be armed with UB-16 rocket pods.

Ex-Egyptian MiG-21MF

Ex-Egyptian Mi-8T carrying UB-16 rockets pods

These former Egyptian Mig-21s may have been the aircrafts involved in these attacks. By the end of 2014, in al-Watiya AB, work has been started to make operational former Su-22s. Ten to twelve of these Su-22Ms were stored in shelters before the uprising and escaped the destruction by NATO because they were decommissioned. Only two Mig-23MLs were operational, serial #6472 at Benina AB and serial #6132 at al-Watiya AB along with Mig-23UB serial #7834. Beginning March 2015, two new further Egyptian Mig-21MFs were delivered at Gamal Abdul El Nasser near Tobruk International Airport. On 26th, four new Mi-35P helicopters were delivered in Marj to the Libya National Army (LNA).

In parallel of the commissioning of one Su-22UM-3K and one Mirage F1AD on 1st December 2015 (refurbishing for one year), LNA AF (Libyan National Army Air Force or ex-Libyan Air Force) started working on a new MiG-23ML (serial number #26453). On 4th December, Libyan mechanicians were refurbishing the engine as shown on the photos below :

Begining February 2016, the engine repairing was complete :

At the same period, the LNA AF lost the two last MiG-23s of its fleet and one pilot. While its new Su-22UM-3K started tests flights before being engaged in operations, mechanicians began engine tests on the new MiG-23ML as we can see (and hear) on the two videos below. This two new aircrafts, together with the Mirage F1AD soon operational will be of great help for the new operation "blood of the martyr" launched by LNA against Benghazi Islamist militia groups’ bases from 20 February.

As already written on this blog, mechanicians began engine tests on the new MiG-23ML serial #26453 mid-February. Yesterday, this new "Flogger" entered in service in the LNA AF fleet. According to some Libyan militaries, this aircraft made its first flight at Tobruk air base, but no photo or video can prove such information at that time.

Alongside the refurbish of this MiG-23, mechanics are involved in maintenance of two Fishbeds : MiG-21MF serial # 27 and MiG-21bis serial # 614.

The Air Force is fully engaged in operation "blood of the martyr" launched by LNA against Benghazi Islamist militia groups’ bases from 20 February. As the mechanicians, the armorers are very sollicited to keep operational all the aircrafts and helicopters in order to maintain pressure against IS and Islamist militants. Sunday, March 6th, 2016, a formation of six new MiG-21s and six new Mi-8s arrived at Gamal Abdel Nasser airbase near Tobruk according to Libyan National Army Air Force pilot officer. The origin of these aircrafts is not yet known, but suspicion focused on Egypt, which has already delivered at least eleven Mi-8Ts and seven MiG-21MFs which we must addthe numerousspare parts forthemaintenance of the fleetsof"Fishbed". On the three first photos below, the Mi-8s are seen flying over Tobruk. On the fourth pictures, we can notice that the Egyptian serial, flag and roundel are hidden. The Libyan National Army Air Force has now in its inventory 26 fighter jets : 23 MiG-21s, one MiG-23ML, one Su-22UM, one Mirage F1AD; the Libyan National Army Aviation has 27 helicopters : five Mi-35s, 21 M-8s and one Mi-171.

The six new Mi-8s in the sky of Tobruk on March 6th, 2016

Two of the six new Mi-8s with hidden serial, flag and roundel, seen at Gamal Abdel Nasser AB on March 6th, 2016

Since the begining of operation "blood of the martyr" launched by LNA against Benghazi Islamist militia groups’ bases from 20 February, the air force pilots of the two sides (LNA and Libya Dawn) were very sollicited. On February 21st, L-39 aircrafts coming from Misrata carried out airstrikes on the positions of ISIS in Sirte. Indeed, ISIS fighters have changed their positions through Sirte after the US air strike on his recruits at Sabratha on 19th. On 23rd, L-39s targeted the "River Company" ( held by ISIS) around the city. On 27th, massive air raids (led by the MiG-21s of Tobruk) targeted the sites of terrorist militias in central Qnfodh and Hawari near the cement plant. The Mi-35s, meanwhile, attacked a group of freighters off Benghazi, destroying three of them and forcing the fourth to flee. It would seem that these vessels were carrying reinforcements and supplies to SCBR (Shura Council of Benghazi Revolutionaries) and headed for the Jewel Resort west of Benghazi. On 28th, a convoy of 15 vehicles was attacked by unidentified aircraft in the Shimikh Valley near Bani Walid, the US and the LNA denying any involvement in the attacks. On 29th, L-39 aircrafts coming from Misrata touched a boat off the coast of Sirte and destroyed a hotel in the city. Takeoffs take place several times a day from the base of Misrata. On March 3rd, a Mi-35 targeted a bulldozer coming from Misrata and carrying ammunition and weapons while the Mi-8Ts and Mi-35s were conducting intensive air raids on a number of terrorist groups affiliated ("February 17th Martyrs Brigade") in the axis of Garyounis and Sabri.

One MiG-21bis from Gamal AbdelNasser AB landed at Benina AB after striking the cement plant in Benghazi on March 5th

On 6th, LNA AF targeted a few sites, including one ammunition store at Sabri, in the center of Benghazi. Yesterday, 28 of ISIS elements were killed in air raids on the city of Sirte while the Air Force flew above the city of Benghazi and bombed ISIS sites in the western axis.
